SHILLONG

The Place - The capital city of Meghalaya (after the capital has been shifted from Cherapunji in 1864 by the British Government) with an area of 22430 sq km. The height of Shillong is 1500 meter. 80% of the population is from Khasi, Garo & Jayantia Tribes. The favourite local food is Pork and Rice. Shillong experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon seasons. Nearest Airport is Omroi, which is 30 km away from Shillong. Nearest Railway Station is Guwahati in Assam. The distance from Guwahati to Shillong is 105 km. In the way take a halt at Barapani or you may take a separate trip to this excellent lake.

Shillong Peak - This 1963 meter high peak is the topmost viewpoint of the city situated at a distance of 15 kms from main city. From this hilltop you can experience the pictorial view of the Shillong City & the Himalayan range.
Wards Lake - It is located at the heart of the city, a 5 minutes walking distance from Police Bazaar. One can enjoy boating through out the lake. Fishing arrangements are also available for interested ones.
Delimore Wankhar Butterfly museum - a must watchable place with a wide range of collection of various species of butterfly.
Cherapunji - Situated at a distance of 55 km from Shillong, the height of Cherapunji is 4456 ft. The total rainfall of the region is around 500 inches; previously, Cherapunji was the highest rainfall area in the world, now it has shifted to Mousingram, 12 kms from Cherapunji. The way to Cherapunji from Shillong is like a landscape surrounded by far & pine trees. Ramakrishna Mission comes in the way to Cherapunji and there one can see Orange Gardens also. One can collect the forest honey from Cherapunji Bazar.
Mouswai falls - During rainy seasons, the beauty of this waterfall can be compared with Niagra falls. The nearby Nou Kalikai falls named after Kalikai, a local woman, who committed suicide due to the death of her child, is the 4th highest waterfall in the world.
